Newborn And Sleep – How Much Need A Newborn?
The first few weeks newborn can sleep up to 16-20 hours per day in sessions of 3-4 hours. Make sure the baby sleeps safely and quietly by:
- Put the baby on his back on a firm surface.
- Remove all the extra items like pillows, soft stuffed animals and fuzzies from the bed.
- Sleep near the baby, but not in the same bed. (If you want you could sleep with your baby in the same bed, but make sure to secure the baby, so you’re not rolling over the baby during sleep.)
- Keep the room temperature at around 20 to 23 degrees Celsius.
Tips For Mom:
- Help your child learn the difference between day and night by dimming the light at night and a stronger light by day.
- Food always the baby and change diapers just before he puts to bed.
- Newborns spend so much time on their backs while they sleep that is important to often turn them on the stomach or let them sit awhile when they are awake.
- Avoid to wake the baby unnecessarily choose a diaper that is comfortable and provides up to 12 hours of dryness.
- Newborns need to be fed about every three hours around the clock. But as time goes by, there will be longer between meals and child will sleep in longer intervals or all night (with a few naps during the day).

There is some great information here on baby’s sleeping patterns. I have to tell you, though, I don’t think it’s a one size fits all.
We have three children and all three exhibited different patterns. Our first child (who is now 19) was by far the easiest one. She slept through the night the first night she was born, and that became her normal pattern. I could not understand what all the fuss was with all these “tired parents” when my wife and I were getting a solid 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night.
Then our second child was born. He slept well the first few nights and I thought we were in for a similar experience as our first child. I was wrong. He started getting up regularly, mostly for feeding. He was a strong eater and we could not keep him satisfied. The only way we could get 4 hours straight was to supplement by mixing powder formula with mom’s breast milk. That would give him a full enough belly to get through 4 hours.
I guess my point is, they are all different and there is not a one size fits all trick to get a baby into a sleeping pattern. But you have some great tips here and I think they will help new parents get their new baby into a good sleeping pattern.

But I believe the majority of parents will experience that not all baby sleep through the night. And you got that experience with the second child, so you know how its like too I hope that the information will help parents along the way.
Did you know that there are people out there who specialize in baby and sleep? They tend to be expensive. But I guess it’s worth it if the sleeping problem resolved. My wife and I never use it, maybe I’ll cover this in another page/post later
